Becoming a qualified driving instructor is a rewarding career choice that allows you to help others gain independence and confidence on the road. At DLP (Driving Lessons Pro), we guide you through every stage of the process — from your first steps to full qualification.

The journey begins with meeting the DVSA requirements. To start, you must be at least 21 years old, have held a full UK driving licence for at least three years, and maintain a clean driving record. Once eligible, you can apply to join the Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) register.

Training is divided into three parts:

Part 1 – Theory and Hazard Perception: You’ll study road safety, driving techniques, and instructional methods before taking a computer-based test.

Part 2 – Driving Ability: This stage assesses your advanced driving skills through a practical test similar to the learner driving test, but at a higher standard.

Part 3 – Instructional Ability: You’ll demonstrate your ability to teach learners effectively, showing communication, observation, and instructional skills.

Between Parts 2 and 3, you can apply for a trainee (PDI) licence, which allows you to gain real teaching experience while earning as you train — an excellent opportunity to build confidence and refine your skills.

At DLP, our ORDIT-registered driving instructor provides personalised support throughout your journey. We provide practical coaching to ensure you’re fully prepared for each stage of the ADI qualification.

Once you’ve successfully passed all three parts, you’ll be added to the DVSA’s Approved Driving Instructor Register, allowing you to teach learner drivers professionally.
